01 — The story

The story

Bheem Pul is a natural stone bridge across a narrow gorge of the Saraswati River at Mana village, a short way beyond Badrinath. The river rushes underneath in a fast, foaming torrent, and the slab still serves as a crossing.

The name comes from Bheem, the strongest of the Pandava brothers in the Mahabharata. Local tradition holds that he laid one enormous boulder over the stream so his brothers could get across while the Pandavas travelled through the Himalayas, and for this reason the bridge is treated as a piece of living mythology.
