The story

Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary lies about 25 km from Agartala in Sepahijala district. Its forests of sal, chamal, garjan and bamboo hold some 456 plant species, among them agar, nageshwar and the rare medicinal Rauwolfia serpentina, and more than 150 bird species have been recorded. The area is managed in five zones for wildlife conservation and also has horticultural displays.

Within the sanctuary is the Clouded Leopard National Park, set aside for the elusive cat. Primates are a highlight, notably the spectacled langur, capped langur and rhesus macaque, and other residents include the crab-eating mongoose, leopard, barking deer, jungle fowl, elephants and many butterflies. Sepahijala Lake draws moorhens, water cocks and cranes and is used for boating, while elephant rides are offered in the forest.
