01 — The story

The story

Durgabari Tea Estate lies close to Agartala and is among the nineteen tea gardens of West Tripura, the district that leads the state in tea output. Its nearness to the capital makes it an easy outing for those who want to walk among rows of tea bushes, and it remains a working estate.

The garden dates from the late 19th century, when British planters found the climate and soil of the area suited to tea. It takes its name from an old Durga temple nearby. Reminders of the colonial period survive in the manager's bungalow and other buildings, and the estate grows Camellia sinensis for black tea.
