01 — The story

The story

Khumulwng Eco Park covers about 14.5 hectares in the Jirania sub-division of West Tripura, roughly 25 minutes by road from Agartala. It was developed with an emphasis on low-impact recreation, combining landscaped gardens and footpaths with boating on Khumulwng Lake, and it is a popular picnic spot. Birdlife is common, and a small zoo keeps deer, monkeys, peacocks and other animals and birds.

The centrepiece is the Tribal Museum cum Heritage Centre, devoted to the nineteen tribal communities of Tripura. Its displays cover daily life, customs and history, including handlooms and woven cloth, the methods of jhum (shifting) cultivation, and a collection of traditional musical instruments from the state's indigenous groups.
