01 — The story

The story

Maharaja Radha Kishore Manikya built this white palace in the centre of Agartala as the seat of the Manikya kings, a dynasty said to have ruled Tripura for more than a thousand years. Rabindranath Tagore is credited with giving it its name. After Tripura joined India, the state government bought the building and used it to house the Legislative Assembly; it now serves as the State Museum, with galleries on regional culture, history, weapons, textiles and paintings.

Three domes crown the building, the highest rising to 86 feet, and the state rooms include a durbar hall, a throne room, a reception hall and a library. Notable features are a Chinese room whose tiles and ceiling were made by craftsmen from China, a ceiling of Belgian glass, a throne made of elephant tusk and a royal carriage built by the British firm Martin & Burn. The grounds are laid out as gardens with pools and fountains between two large artificial ponds, and the facade is floodlit after dark while the fountains play.
