01 — The story

The story

Sajjangarh Biological Park lies in the Aravalli hills of Udaipur, next to Sajjangarh, the hilltop Monsoon Palace that Maharana Sajjan Singh of Mewar raised on Bansdara Peak in the late 19th century as a summer retreat and astronomical centre. The park was set up in 2015 to protect the area's wildlife and give endangered animals a secure home.

It covers more than 36 hectares of forest and rocky ground crossed by trails and small streams. Animals on view include Bengal tigers, leopards and deer, and migratory birds visit in season, while guides explain the conservation status of the species. Native Aravalli trees and plants line the paths, and the palace remains a constant presence on the ridge above.
