Sabz Burj, the Green Tower, is an octagonal tomb from the 1530s standing on a traffic island on Mathura Road near Nizamuddin, west of Humayun's Tomb. It is one of the earliest Mughal buildings in Delhi and shows Timurid influence from Central Asia. No inscription names its builder or occupant, though the historian Ebba Koch has argued that Humayun built it for his mother, Maham Begum.
The name refers to green glazed tiles on the drum, dome and finial. Its ceiling, painted with gold and lapis lazuli, is thought to be the earliest painted ceiling in any Mughal building, with no surviving parallel. The tomb was once a police station, which damaged the interior, and blue tiles fitted in the 1980s were removed when the Aga Khan Trust for Culture restored it between 2018 and 2021.
