Khairul Manazil, meaning the most auspicious of houses, is a mosque and madrasa on Mathura Road opposite Purana Qila, south-east of Sher Shah Gate. It was built in 1561 by Maham Anga, Akbar's wet nurse and one of the most powerful figures at his court. Tradition says an assassin attacked Akbar near the mosque in 1564 as he rode back from the Nizamuddin Dargah, and the building was later used as a madrasa.
The red sandstone gateway is Mughal in style, while the inner buildings keep features of Delhi Sultanate design. A marble plaque over the central arch bears a Persian chronogram by the court poet Shihabuddin Ahmad Khan, whose letters add up to 969 AH, or 1561–62. The monument is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.
