01 — The story

The story

Purana Qila, the Old Fort, on Mathura Road near Pragati Maidan, served as the inner fort of Dinpanah, counted as Delhi's sixth city. Humayun began it in the 16th century on ground occupied since about 1000 BC and long linked with Indraprastha of the Mahabharata; until the early 1900s it was called Pandavon ka Qila. Sher Shah Suri seized power, strengthened the fort and renamed it Shergarh, before Humayun returned 15 years later and restored the name Dinpanah.

The walls run for almost 1.5 km and rise to 18 metres, with the Bara Darwaza on the west, the Humayun Gate on the south and the Talaqi Gate. Inside are Sher Shah's single-domed Qila-i-Kuhna Mosque of 1541, the octagonal Sher Mandal from which Humayun fell to his death, a baoli and a hammam.
