01 — The story

The story

The National Zoological Park, widely known as Delhi Zoo, opened in 1959 near Purana Qila and covers 176 acres. Enclosures are built to resemble the natural habitats of the animals, and the zoo runs breeding programmes for endangered species. Battery-operated vehicles are available, though the grounds can also be covered on foot.

Animals include Indian rhinoceroses, white tigers and red junglefowl. The zoo also offers nature walks, bird-watching tours and learning sessions for visitors. One episode from its history came in 2016, when a sloth bear climbed out of its enclosure, crossed the moat and was caught several hours later.
