01 — The story

The story

The Remember Bhopal Museum commemorates the gas leak at the Union Carbide pesticide plant on 2 December 1984, the largest industrial disaster by death toll. It opened on the 30th anniversary, 2 December 2014, in a converted flat about 2.5 km from the factory, rented from a family affected by the disaster. It takes no government or corporate funds.

The museum was created by the Remember Bhopal Trust, formed in 2012 by survivors and campaigners, with Rama Lakshmi as curator and Shalini Sharma as co-ordinator. Its aim is to centre the voices of survivors, and their stories and belongings shape what visitors see. Photographs, campaign posters, oral histories and protest songs sit alongside personal objects such as a child's dress and a stopped pocket watch, often the last link between families and those they lost.
