01 — The story

The story

Taj-ul-Masjid, the 'Crown among Mosques', is described as the largest mosque in India, with room for 175,000 worshippers. It was started by Shah Jahan Begum of Bhopal and her daughter Sultan Jahan Begum and finally completed with the backing of Hamidullah Khan. Its style invites comparison with Delhi's Jama Masjid and the Badshahi Mosque in Lahore.

The mosque has a pink facade, two octagonal minarets 18 storeys high, white marble domes with Belgian crystal finials, and a main hall whose pillars support 27 ceilings. Hollow domes improve the acoustics, and a pond reflects the building. Unusually for its time it included a zenana gallery for women, and it now runs a madrasa teaching English, social sciences and mathematics alongside Quranic studies.
