Rani Kamlapati Palace was built in 1722 by Nizam Shah for the Gond queen Kamlapati, remembered as Bhopal's last Hindu queen, who chose Jal Samadhi to protect her dignity. It stands on the bridge between the upper and lower lakes and is a Monument of National Importance under the Archaeological Survey of India. Dost Mohammad Khan, the first Nawab of Bhopal, was crowned here in 1723, and later rulers, including the Begums, lived in it.
The two-storey palace is built of Lakhauri bricks in an Indo-Islamic style. Pillars and stairways lead to balconies overlooking the lake, fluted pillars carry cusped arches, and the merlons are shaped like lotuses in reference to the queen's name. Its design is attributed to the architect Shankar Lal.
