Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya, a national 'Museum of Man', occupies a large site on Shyamala Hills in Bhopal. The idea was raised by Sachin Roy at the 1970 Indian Science Congress in Calcutta, and the Madhya Pradesh government gave 200 acres for it. It opened in 1979, at first in New Delhi.
The museum presents living traditions as well as heritage. Open-air exhibitions include a Tribal Habitat, Coastal, Desert and Himalayan villages, rock art, a Mythological Trail and a Traditional Technology Park. Indoor galleries in Veethi-Sankul and the Bhopal Gallery cover human evolution, masks, music, ritual art, cuisine and the North-East, and there are workshops, festivals, artists' camps and a reference library.
