01 — The story

The story

This museum in Bhopal is given over to the cultures of seven major tribal communities of Madhya Pradesh: the Bhil, Gond, Baiga, Korku, Kol, Sahariya and Bhariya. Its galleries include full-scale reconstructions of tribal dwellings built from mud and bamboo, along with displays on rituals, festivals, everyday tools and beliefs rooted in nature, such as the veneration of the banyan and stories about how bamboo came to be.

Terracotta figures that retell legends and sculptures of children at traditional games such as tug-of-war are among the exhibits. A craft shop called Chinhari sells tribal handiwork, an amphitheatre hosts cultural performances, and the museum publishes its own magazine on the state's tribal traditions.
