01 — The story

The story

Moti Masjid, the 'Pearl Mosque', was commissioned in Bhopal by Sikander Jahan Begum in the 19th century as part of her building programme of monuments, roads and bridges. It resembles Delhi's Jama Masjid, and its stones are carved in the form of flowers.

The mosque combines a red-brick and white marble exterior with two dark red minarets topped by golden spikes. A decorated archway leads into a white marble main hall, and the prayer hall sits on a raised platform. Near the eastern gate are two ablution tanks with marble fountains, and gardens surround the building.
