Jama Masjid in central Bhopal was begun in 1837 under Qudsiya Begum and took nearly 24 years to finish, with her chief minister Nawab Siddiq Hasan Khan overseeing completion. Built of red stone, it has three marble domes, two tall minarets with gold spikes that once served as lookouts, and carved arches and Quranic inscriptions in the prayer hall.
The courtyard holds up to 15,000 worshippers, and the mosque keeps a gold Quran said to be handwritten by Hazrat Ali. It hosts daily prayers and an annual Urs honouring Hazrat Pir Baba. A royal market and a small pond lie next to it, and nearby shops sell prayer mats and caps.
