01 — The story

The story

Ram Jhula is a suspension bridge over the Ganga in Rishikesh, named after Lord Rama; jhula is the Hindi word for swing. It spans 450 feet between the two banks. Cars are not permitted, but pedestrians, bicycles and two-wheelers use it, and the deck sways slightly underfoot.

The crossing gives views of the river, the wooded hills and the temples along both banks. The area around the bridge is busy with shops, eateries, ashrams and old temples, and the riverbanks here have long drawn sages and pilgrims.
