The story

Kaleshwar Mahadev is a Shiva temple in Lansdowne and is thought to be the oldest shrine in the town. Its lingam is held to be swayambhu, meaning it formed on its own rather than being made. Thick oak and pine forest surrounds the temple, which also serves as a quiet place for meditation and looks out over the hills and valleys around the town. Devotees from across the state gather here, especially at Shivratri.

The name comes from Sage Kalun, a devotee of Shiva. Local belief holds that he carried out long penance and meditation at this spot until Shiva appeared to him and blessed him.
