The story

Kyunkaleshwar Mahadev Temple, also called Kankaleshwar Mahadev, is a Shiva shrine in Pauri Garhwal, standing at about 1,800 m above the Alaknanda Valley. Local tradition holds that a revered saint and philosopher founded it in the 8th century. Forest surrounds the site, and on clear days the snow peaks of the Himalayas are visible from the temple grounds.

The stone building follows a style comparable to Kedarnath Temple, and its carved walls have lasted for centuries. Shiva is the main deity, though the complex also holds idols of several other gods. The temple is reached from Pauri town by a short drive followed by a walk along a forest path.
