01 — The story

The story

St. Mary's Church stands along the path to the Tip N Top point in Lansdowne. It was built in 1895 by Col. A.B.H. Hume, an officer of the Royal Engineers, for the British Army garrison, and it was dedicated to Mary, mother of Jesus. After 1947 the church was closed, and the Garhwal Rifles Regimental Centre later converted it into a museum.

The neo-Gothic building combines colonial and traditional design. A bell tower with a spire rises above a stone facade with carved walls and arched entrances. Inside are vaulted ceilings, fluted columns, carved screens, altars and sculptures, and stained-glass windows showing religious scenes.
