01 — The story

The story

Lord Rawlinson, Commander-in-Chief of India at the time, set up this memorial in 1923 on the Parade Ground at Lansdowne. It honours the Garhwal Regiment of the Indian Army, and its tall structure carries the names of soldiers from the regiment who died in service. The Darwan Singh Museum lies a short walk away, and the two are often visited together.

The Garhwal Rifles date back to British rule, when its men served on the frontier during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It went on to fight in both World Wars and in conflicts after independence, collecting many honours. Its soldiers come mostly from the seven Garhwal districts of Uttarakhand.
