01 — The story

The story

The Raja Bhartrihari Panorama in Alwar is an exhibition that tells the life of King Bharthari, a ruler and poet of ancient Ujjain, through a sequence of scenes. The paintings are done in traditional Rajasthani style, with captions in Hindi and English, and the panorama also gives space to the region's arts, music and literature.

In the story it follows, Bharthari was a wise and brave king devoted to his queen, Pingala. When he learned that she loved a courtier, Lakhan, he gave up his throne and wealth and went to live in the forest. There he became a disciple of the yogi Guru Gorakhnath and reached enlightenment through meditation and austerity. The scenes run from his royal youth through his awakening to his renunciation.
