01 — The story

The story

Also called Fateh Jang ka Gumbad, this mausoleum stands in Alwar city and dates from 1647. It honours Fateh Jung, who served the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan as a minister and once governed Alwar; the Khanzada rulers of the town were his kin.

The building rises through five storeys. Three of them form a square block about 60 feet high, pierced by seven openings on every side, and an octagonal minaret marks each corner beneath a large central dome. The design mixes Mughal and Rajput features. Inside, the walls and ceilings are finished in plaster, and Quranic inscriptions run across the first floor. A small garden surrounds the tomb, with boards explaining its history.
