Siliserh is an artificial lake among the bare Aravalli hills outside Alwar. Maharaja Vinay Singh created it in 1845 by damming a tributary of the Ruparel River to supply the city with water, and aqueducts from that scheme still stand around it.
The forest along the shore supports more than 100 kinds of birds, and local stories of crocodiles in the water are taken seriously enough that warning signs are posted. Overlooking the lake is the Siliserh Lake Palace, which the maharaja built for his queen Shila Devi, a princess from Bharatpur. It served as a royal hunting lodge and now operates as a heritage hotel, with balconies looking out across the water.
