01 — The story

The story

Bhangarh Fort lies in the Aravalli hills roughly halfway between Jaipur and Alwar, about 50 km from Sariska. It is linked with Madho Singh I, for whom it was meant as a residence, and today it is better known as reputedly the most haunted spot in the country.

Four gates, the Lahori, Ajmeri, Phulbari and Delhi gates, lead into a walled area of temples, palaces and havelis. A temple to Someshwar, with fine carving, is a focus for local worshippers and gives views over the dry country around. Folklore tells of a curse laid by a tantric after a failed love affair, which is said to have caused the town to be abandoned, and spirits are believed to walk there at night. Entry is not allowed before sunrise or after sunset.
