The story

Pabargad is a hill fort in Akole taluka of Ahmednagar (Ahilyanagar) district, about 50 km from Igatpuri by way of Bhandardara, close to the Igatpuri–Bhandardara–Sangamner road. Almost nothing is known of its history, and the climb is a difficult one; it can be reached in every season except the monsoon.

Two trails start from Guhire village, and the way up follows a narrow path behind the Hanuman temple. The route runs through dense jungle and thickets of karvi, crosses three plateaus and ends with a final scarp, taking about three hours in all. Along the way are a Hanuman figure cut into the rock, a Bhairoba temple and a Ganesha idol. Rock-cut steps lead to the summit, where there are four rock-cut cisterns and ruined buildings, and the neighbouring hillock holds natural caves.
