01 — The story

The story

Moti Magri, whose name means Pearl Hill, rises beside Fateh Sagar Lake in Udaipur. Its summit holds a memorial to Maharana Pratap of Mewar and Chetak, the horse he rode against Emperor Akbar's Mughal forces at the Battle of Haldighati in 1575. Green slopes surround the site, and the top looks out over the lake and the city.

The centrepiece is a bronze equestrian statue of the king on Chetak, about 11 feet high and weighing some 7 tonnes, set up by Maharana Bhagwat Singh. The memorial retells the story that made the pair famous in Mewar: Pratap, remembered as the Lion of Mewar, preferred death to submission, and Chetak, though badly hurt and lamed in the battle, still carried his master out of danger.
