01 — The story

The story

Morarji Castle is a colonial-era mansion in the Mahabaleshwar hills of Satara district. It was put up as a summer retreat for the British elite, at the request of a prominent British aristocrat, and later passed to the Morarji family, whose name it now carries. The building has come through many changes of fortune over the years.

Its design reflects the British influence that shaped Mahabaleshwar during the colonial period. Turrets rise above an exterior with carved detail and Victorian-style balconies, and the house is set among wide gardens and well-kept lawns, a quiet contrast to the busy town.
