01 — The story

The story

Moosi Maharani ki Chhatri is a royal cenotaph at the foot of the Aravalli hills close to the City Palace in Alwar, and is counted among the finest monuments of the Rajput period. A chhatri, named after the umbrella-shaped domes on top, is a memorial pavilion raised for a king, queen or other noble, and is a common sight across Rajasthan.

Moosi was the companion of Maharaja Bakhtawar Singh of Alwar in the early 19th century. Being from another community, she never married him and was not recognised as queen. When he died in 1814 she became sati on his funeral pyre, and in honour of that devotion she was granted the rank of queen after her death. His successor, Maharaja Vinay Singh, built the two-storeyed memorial in 1815 for the late ruler and Moosi, and it came to be known by her name.
