01 — The story

The story

Middle Button Island National Park was created in 1979 and lies within the Rani Jhansi Marine National Park, as do its neighbours North Button and South Button. The island is covered in moist deciduous forest and fringed by sandy beaches and shallow, clear water.

Spotted deer, water lizards and monitor lizards live on land, while the sea holds dugongs, dolphins, turtles, fish and many kinds of coral, and blue whales have been reported offshore. Access is by boat from Port Blair, and the park office handles permits and diving arrangements. There is no accommodation on the island, so visitors either sleep aboard boats or camp with prior permission. Monsoon rain falls from June to October; the dry season from December to April is when most people visit.
