The story

Campbell Bay National Park covers 426 square kilometres of northern Great Nicobar, the biggest of the Nicobar Islands, which lies about 190 km north of Sumatra. Declared in 1992, it belongs to the Great Nicobar Biosphere Reserve and is the largest park in the island territory. A forest buffer roughly 12 km wide separates it from Galathea National Park, and within its bounds rises Mount Thullier, at 642 metres the highest point in the Nicobars.

The park takes in coral reefs, beaches, mangroves and tropical evergreen forest with tree ferns and ground orchids. Nicobar long-tailed and crab-eating macaques, the Nicobar treeshrew, monitor lizards and robber crabs live on land, while megapodes, Nicobar pigeons and white-bellied sea eagles are among the birds. Offshore are dugongs and leatherback and olive ridley turtles. Since 2023 the park has been open to visitors for nature walks, birdwatching, snorkelling and diving.
