01 — The story

The story

Manua Bhan Ki Tekri is a temple on a low hill at Lalghati in Bhopal, dedicated to the saint Manua Bhan. Devotees link it with Shiva and Parvati, its lingam is believed to heal the sick, and thousands come for Shivratri. One legend places the Pandavas here during their exile, and the Simha Gate has a book carved in stone whose script no one has yet read.

The site is also holy to Jains, who call it Mahavir Giri. It keeps the footwear of the Jain saints Jindutta Sureshwar, Vijay Suri and Manutungare along with a statue of Bhadarji, and a large fair is held on Kartik Purnima. The hilltop, reached by path or by ropeway, overlooks the Upper Lake, old Bhopal and Raja Bhoj Airport.
