The story

Machia Biological Park, or Machia Safari Park, is a zoo and conservation facility near Kaylana Lake, about 7–8 km west of Jodhpur. Opened on 20 January 2016 on 41 hectares of protected forest, it replaced the older zoo in Umaid Garden, which no longer had the recognition of the Central Zoo Authority. The Rajasthan Forest Department runs it, and the setting represents the dry thorn-scrub of western Rajasthan, with species such as khejri.

About 20 enclosures hold native animals, among them Asiatic lion, Bengal tiger, Indian leopard, blackbuck, chinkara, gharial, sloth bear, desert fox and Indian wolf. In 2016 a lioness from Junagarh Zoo had three cubs here. Paths are largely paved, and there is a cafeteria, shaded pavilions and a Nature Interpretation Centre. The park closes on Tuesdays and major public holidays, and school programmes and guided tours are held.
