01 — The story

The story

Jaswant Thada is a white marble memorial near Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur, raised by Maharaja Sardar Singh in 1899 for his father, Maharaja Jaswant Singh II, the 33rd Rathore ruler. Built of Makrana marble, the stone also used for the Taj Mahal, it is often called the Taj Mahal of Marwar, and the site became the cremation ground of later Jodhpur rulers.

The temple-like building has a main dome with four smaller domes at its corners and mixes Hindu and Mughal features. Its marble is cut so thin that it glows in sunlight, and pierced jali screens throw patterned shadows. Inside, twelve pillars carry the main hall, whose walls show carved deities and portraits of Rathore rulers, with the cenotaph at the centre. Red sandstone steps, lawns around a pond and views of the fort surround it.
