The Sardar Government Museum stands in the Umaid Bagh garden in central Jodhpur, beside a public library and a zoo. It is named after Maharaja Sardar Singh of Jodhpur. The building stood unused for nearly three decades after it was finished, and the museum finally opened to the public in 1936.
The collection is arranged in four sections: archaeology, arms, arts and crafts, and history. The archaeology rooms hold sculpture fragments, inscriptions and old coins, with objects going back to about the 6th century. The armoury has weapons and armour of the former rulers as well as models of warplanes and warships, while the art section shows miniature paintings, metalwork and textiles. The museum also holds music and dance programmes, exhibitions and talks.
