01 — The story

The story

Kaylana Lake, also spelt Kalyana, is an artificial lake on the edge of Jodhpur. It was created in 1872 under Pratap Singh of the Jodhpur royal house by damming the Kalyana river, to give the city a dependable water source in a dry region, and it still supplies water today.

The lake stands out against the surrounding desert country, and on clear days Mehrangarh Fort can be seen in the distance. Trees and gardens line parts of the shore, and paths along the water make it a popular place for walks. Resident and migratory birds use the lake and nearby wetlands, among them herons, egrets and flamingos, so it draws birdwatchers, especially in the migration season.
