01 — The story

The story

Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur was built between 1928 and 1943 as the home of the Jodhpur royal family, and it is still counted among the world's largest private homes. Its design combines Indian and European styles, with carved detailing, large halls and broad gardens. The building work also acted as famine relief, giving employment to thousands of people during a severe famine.

Part of the palace is a museum open to visitors. It presents the lifestyle of the royal family through artefacts and memorabilia, and its collection of vintage cars is one of its best-known displays. The rest of the building is still lived in by the family.
