The story

Mahamandir is a Shiva temple in Jodhpur, a few kilometres from Mehrangarh Fort. It dates from the early 19th century and took about ten years to build, and it remains an active place of worship that also draws visitors interested in temple architecture.

The temple is built of red sandstone and stands on 84 pillars, each carved with ornament and figures, including sculptures of yoga postures. A large central courtyard is surrounded by shrines to other Hindu deities, and the complex has been restored several times. The busiest time is Maha Shivratri in February or March, when the temple is hung with lights and flowers and large crowds come for the rituals.
