01 — The story

The story

Ghanta Ghar is the clock tower at the heart of old Jodhpur, standing in the busy Sardar Market below Mehrangarh Fort. It was raised by Maharaja Sardar Singh, after whom the market is named, and is traditionally taken to mark where the old city begins. Trade grew up around it, and the square is now one of Jodhpur's main bazaars for textiles, spices and handicrafts.

The tower is built of the same local sandstone as the fort and rises in tiers to a domed top. Its broad square base has carved jharokha balconies and is ringed by an octagonal stone railing, so the tower works as a roundabout. More jharokhas decorate the lower tiers, the clock sits higher up and a pillared chhatri crowns it. The clock was brought from Britain, reportedly from the makers of London's famous clock tower, and its mechanism can be seen from inside.
