The story

Kottarakkulam Sree Mahaganapathy Temple stands in the middle of Kollam city, close to the Kollam Civil Station. Lord Ganesh is the main deity, alongside Nagaraja and Swami Ayyappan. Priestly duties are held by the city's Tamil Brahmin community of some 270 families, and the usual prasadam is appam and modakam.

Though the building looks modern, the temple is an old foundation that was rebuilt into its present form in 1984, and in recent years it has drawn more devotees from distant places. Its main event is the annual Vinayaka Chathurthi festival, which begins in August, with rituals such as the Ashta Dravya Mahaganapathy Homam, kalasha pooja, laksharchana and pushpabhishekam.
