The story

Anandavalleeswaram Sri Mahadevar Temple stands in the Anandavalleeswaram neighbourhood of Kollam, west of the Collectorate and 2.5 km from Kollam Junction station. Folklore credits Parashurama with installing its Shiva idol, and it is counted among Kerala's 108 Shiva temples. Its main sanctum, built of teak, is said to be 1,200 years old.

Shiva, called Ananda Swaroopan, faces west, while Parvati as Anandavally faces east in the same sreekovil; she was added later, and the temple's name comes from the joy (anandam) both are believed to share. Worshippers enter through Shiva's door even though the goddess's shrine is nearer the entrance. A separate shrine holds Maha Vishnu with Lakshmi and Bhoomi Devi alongside Krishna, an arrangement said to be unique. The ten-day festival in Meenam (March–April) opens with the flag-hoisting and brings Pallivetta, Arattu, processions, music, dance and fireworks, and Shivaratri is also celebrated. A stolen panchaloha Krishna idol was recovered by police in 2015.
