The story

The Khalanga War Memorial in Dehradun commemorates the Battle of Nalapani of 1814, the opening battle of the Anglo-Nepalese War. About 600 Gorkha soldiers held Khalanga Fort for six weeks against roughly 3,000 British troops, without food or water, and the victorious British later built a memorial honouring their opponents. Also called the Kalinga War Memorial, the site is now cared for by the Archaeological Survey of India.

Further downhill, Kalinga Park near Sahastradhara Road holds the first memorial the British put up, a pair of obelisks. One honours Major General Gillespie and his forces; the other honours the Gorkha general Balbhadra Thapa and his men. A mela celebrating Gorkha bravery and culture is held every November.
