01 — The story

The story

Jwala Devi Temple stands above 2,000 metres in the hills of Mussoorie and is dedicated to Jwala Devi, a form of Goddess Durga. Forest surrounds the old temple, which looks over the Doon Valley and the Shivalik ranges.

Its central feature is a flame that has burned for centuries with no natural fuel source, a phenomenon that remains unexplained. According to legend, the flames stand for the nine forms of the goddess, each with its own colour and strength, representing creation and destruction. Pilgrims climb the steps to the shrine to pray and make offerings for health and prosperity.
