01 — The story

The story

Asan Barrage is a barrage on the Asan River in Dehradun district, built by the Uttar Pradesh Irrigation Department. Work started in the late 1950s and finished in 1967, with flood control and water management as its main purposes.

The reservoir behind it later turned into a wintering ground for migratory birds, some arriving from Siberia and Central Asia; more than 53 species have been recorded, among them cranes and egrets. Walking trails run through the surrounding Asan Conservation Reserve, where deer, langurs and butterflies can be seen, and there are designated picnic spots and boating on the water. Snow peaks of the Himalayas are visible from the top of the barrage.
