The story

Kausar Nag, known in Sanskrit as Kramasaras, is a high lake at about 3,500 metres in the Pir Panjal range of Kulgam district. It stretches roughly 3 km and is up to 0.75 km wide, and it is the main source of the Veshaw River, which feeds the Jhelum. Hindus hold it sacred to Vishnu: one belief says he made it by pressing down his foot, so it is also called Vishnu Pad, and the Nilamata Purana tells of Manu's boat coming to rest in the mountains above it after the great flood.

The lake can be reached in summer by a 36 km hiking trail from Aharbal, which is about 70 km by road from Srinagar via Pulwama and Shopian. A tougher route from the south, through Reasi in the Jammu region, is the one used today for the Hindu yatra to the lake; the old Kulgam pilgrim route fell out of use in the 1990s.
