01 — The story

The story

The Lidder rises at about 4,653 metres at the Kolahoi Glacier and travels roughly 73 kilometres through the Pahalgam valley before joining the Jhelum. Two headstreams form it: the Lidder West, fed by Kolahoi, and the Lidder East, which flows out of Sheshnag Lake. The pair meet close to Pahalgam town, and from there the river runs cold and clear between green banks and alpine meadows.

Its rapids draw rafting groups, and anglers of every level come to fish for trout along its course. Beyond recreation, the river is a key water supply for the Anantnag area, irrigating farmland downstream. Aru Valley, Betaab Valley, Chandanwari and the Baisaran meadows all lie within easy reach of its banks.
