01 — The story

The story

This temple in Uttersoo, in Anantnag district, is built around water rather than an idol. According to local belief, the saint Swami Shivananda saw the spot in a dream and then found five springs meeting in the form of the sacred Om; two of them join, a union read as Shiva and Shakti. Uma Nagri means home of Uma.

The complex is also called Brari Angan, the cat's courtyard, after a story in which the swami turned a stray cat into a lion before a doubting governor, who then granted land for the shrine. A Maha Yajna is held each year on the swami's anniversary, and Shivratri, Navratri and Uma Jayanti draw crowds between January and April.
