01 — The story

The story

Masjid Syed Sahib lies below the Martand Plateau in Anantnag district. It takes its name from the Sufi teacher Hazrat Syed Mohammed Inayat-Ullah Qadiri Samnani, who came to Kashmir from Samnan with his followers and started building the mosque in 1528.

The two-tier structure is made largely of wood and sun-dried brick, blending local and Central Asian design. A courtyard opens at its centre, a mihrab on the west wall marks the direction of Mecca, and carved geometric and floral work fills the ceilings and pillars beneath stained-glass windows. The mosque also functions as a school of Islamic learning and a community meeting place. Special prayers mark the saint's death anniversary on the 8th of Shaban, and restoration work has been carried out in recent years.
