The story

This mosque in the Mohalla Khaki Shaban quarter of Reshi Bazaar, Anantnag, began as a bare platform visited by the saint Shah Hamdan. His son Mir Muhammad Hamdani finished the ground floor by 1397, and the scholar Baba Dawood Khaki added the upper two storeys in 1579 and 1582. Baba Dawood Khaki served as a Qazi of Kashmir, followed Sheikh Hamza Makhdoom and wrote works such as Virdul Murideen.

Built mostly of timber and mud brick on a rectangular plan around a central court, the building mixes Kashmiri and Mughal elements. Carved geometric and floral patterns cover its ceilings and pillars, and coloured glass windows light the prayer hall. It has long doubled as a place of religious teaching and draws large gatherings at Eid.
